Knowledge arbitrage is the practice of turning information gaps into income streams. For decades it’s been the business model of the professional class: consultants, analysts, researchers, strategists, and perhaps many readers of this piece.
But that edge is fading fast. AI is flattening the playing field, making high-quality insights instantly accessible to anyone with a prompt and a pulse. The advantage is no longer in knowing something others don’t. It’s in discovering what no one’s seen yet.

The professionals of tomorrow will win by using data and AI to explore uncharted territory and connect dots others have not seen. Data vendors face a clear choice: continue selling static datasets or actively participate in a smarter, more dynamic data economy. This means packaging data with context, clarity, and accessibility. And not just to accommodate human users, but also for AI.
This concept frames data as a utility. Much like electricity, data should be metered and delivered on-demand. This vision is the foundation of what some call a data grid: precise pieces of data from multiple vendors and priced transparently by the byte, cell, or insight.
Data As Energy
The era of perfect information demands new thinking from data vendors. Historically, acquiring data meant buying large, costly datasets with vast irrelevant content, and to pay large sums for the people and tech necessary to manipulate the data. This model handicapped smaller entities.
But imagine data functioning more like energy: instantly available, transparently priced, and precisely measured for specific needs. This utility-based approach changes the economics significantly. Instead of bulky datasets, data vendors would provide precisely what's needed, continuously fetched by a swarm of always-on AI agents, ensuring efficiency and minimal waste.
OK, perhaps an interesting concept, but how do we shift from today's model to a future where people could conceivable buy just a single, precise data point? This requires rethinking data structures, pricing, and distribution methods.
Implementing Granular Pricing
Snowflake nailed the principle of usage-based pricing but anchored it to compute. Every query, scan, and join is metered, allowing customers to pay only for the processing power they consume. This model brought clarity to data infrastructure costs, driving broad adoption. But it stops short of applying that same precision to the data itself.
The next evolution is to meter access at the data layer, pricing by the specific fragments or records used, not just the horsepower behind the query. As discussed above, this should open the door to entirely new class of users who were previously priced out of discovery.
This is more than a pricing nuance. Metering compute rewards infrastructure usage, but metering data will encourage insight creation, regardless of where the compute occurs. When the cost model shifts to reflect the value of the information itself it allows data providers to monetize more efficiently and gives consumers the confidence to explore without overcommitting. This alignment should unlock a more dynamic and efficient data economy.
Blockchain infrastructure can help make this vision real. With smart contracts and decentralized ledgers, it's possible to meter and price access to data fragments securely and transparently, without relying on centralized intermediaries. An alternative approach would involve aggregators who could create closed grids of curated datasets, instituting their own usage-based pricing models.
