The Big 10:
My School Experimented with ‘Education Equity.’ It Failed. | The Free Press
Well-intended initiatives often have unintended consequences. Moreover, the word “equity” has become a political hot potato. The one thing we can all agree on is that every child should have the right to high-quality education. Feeling good is not the same as doing good, and when it’s all said and done, helping students become all they can be is the part of the scorecard that matters.
AI’s Potential in Special Education: A Researcher’s View | EducationWeek
Special ed teachers and aides (some of the most kind and selfless people among us) work incredibly challenging and exhausting jobs. Part of the beauty of AI is it doesn’t get tired or frustrated…and we think it has the potential to massively improve the lives of both special education students and teachers. This is a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs, and the winner in this category will have to create a highly specialized product offering. Done right, the impact in this category will be tremendous.
Sun Devils 4 Life program helps former ASU athletes complete their education | ASU News
ASU is riding a huge wave with its Sun Devils receiving a top-four seed in the college football playoff. With all the changes in college sports, i.e., NIL, transfer portal, barbarians at the gate…a.k.a. private equity…the challenges faced by the student-athletes and institutions will only become more significant. Kudos to ASU for another innovative program, this one dedicated to “Sun Devils For Life” - helping student-athletes complete their degrees later in life. Forks up!
AI-powered tutor, teaching assistant tested as a way to help educators and students | CBS News
60 Minutes, which reaches 1 in 3 Americans every year, has long been a way for people to get informed about key issues facing society. This edition will not illuminate new findings for those of us who are paying attention, but the always impressive Sal Khan gives a great pitch on how AI in education can be a game-changer.
Alabama Quarterback Jalen Milroe Selected as 2024 Campbell Trophy Recipient | Sports Illustrated
The Heisman Trophy has long been the award that everybody knows goes to the nation’s top college football player. It’s our view, however, that the most prestigious award a collegiate player can receive is the Campbell Trophy. Named after the legendary “Coach of Silicon Valley” Bill Campbell, it goes to the best player, leader, and scholar in the country. Past winners include Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow, Justin Herbert, and Bo Nix. I was privileged to be in the room when this year’s winner, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, was announced on Tuesday night. He gave a lights-out speech on the importance of his family, education, and the game of football. Watch our friend Jack Ford present the trophy to Milroe and his acceptance speech here.
Common Sense Media, OpenAI launch free K-12 AI training course | eSchool News
We’ve seen this movie before. It seems like yesterday that Judy Hamilton-led Classroom Connect sold to Elsevier. The company taught teachers how to use the Internet. Clearly, AI literacy training is a needed service and a good business opportunity…until it’s not. What is foreign today becomes native tomorrow. In the meantime, make hay.
Faculty Must Protect Their Labor from AI Replacement | Inside Higher Ed
Turkeys don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, but trying to prevent AI from integrating into the future of learning is like fighting gravity. Further, universities’ challenges from a product-market fit perspective make them very vulnerable to disruption. The innovator’s dilemma is alive and well, but we’ll say once again, it’s not man vs. machine, it’s man & machine.
After the election, a civics renaissance | Fulcrum
Civics is one of our “Seven C’s” as it relates to the curriculum of the future. While studying civics may seem to some like Back to the Future, we see it as foundational for how we move forward as a society and fitting as we get ready to celebrate our 250th birthday as a country.
Rumors of War | Education Next
At $17,000 spent per student on average, we’re not sure that the problems around public education come from not spending enough money. One thing we should all agree on is that public education needs to be exceptional…and today it’s not. Simple math for you - if you have 17 kids in a classroom and you spend ~$20k on each of them, that’s $340k. The average teacher makes $70k…where does the rest of the money go?
After a “lost decade,” let’s restore high expectations for students | Thomas B. Fordham Institute
To quote Stephanie Saroki, "Literacy is justice. Numeracy is justice." Sometimes, the medicine that gets you well is hard to swallow at first, but the results taste great.
