When you Google “Top AI expert in the world”, the first person who pops up is Andrew Ng. Cofounder and chairman of Coursera, board member of Amazon, managing general partner of AI Fund, founder & CEO of Landin AI, and founder of Deeplearning.AI. There is nobody more influential and insightful in the world of AI than Dr. Ng. As big-time as Andrew is, what’s even more impressive is what a kind and genuine human being he is. All hail King Ng!

To play off my friend Bill Campbell’s quip (“When we have facts, we’ll use facts. When we have opinions, we’ll use mine”), I propose a twist: “When we have data, we use generative AI, when we have opinions we use mine.”
AI is incredible at synthesizing data, but it is hardly anything special when you need to connect dots with significant insight. By design, ChatGPT is the world’s best inside-the-box thinker. We’ve said over and over again that the AI Revolution is about Man & Machine, not Man vs. Machine – and we need to remind students of this. Despite having the most advanced assistant on Earth at their fingertips, a poorly taught student will struggle to harness its full potential without first-principles thinking.

One thing is clear: 75% of voters – democrats, republicans, and independents – support school choice. The entrenched status quo who want to see things stay the way they have been (and continue receiving donations) are likely on the wrong side of the historical ledger.

In what is typically a brutally demanding job, there is unfortunately a short supply of qualified saints. Teacher training programs are currently graduating less than 30,000 new special education teachers each year, falling short of the 46,000 who exit the profession annually.

Corey’s chart and comment speak for themselves…while human resources devoted to K-12 education have skyrocketed, test scores and achievement have not. If the addition of these resources yielded similar up-and-to-the-right results for students, we would be cheering. Sadly, that has not been the case.

Roughly 10 years ago, our friend Andy Kessler delivered an intentionally provocative presentation at the ASU+GSV Summit about how AI would replace teachers. It almost caused a riot. Nobody seriously argues that technology will completely replace teachers, and we do not think AI is a silver bullet. In fact, we think teaching is the most vital profession on Earth, and it will only become more important in a world of AI. It’s not about replacing teachers, it’s about supercharging them. Thoughtfully integrating AI to support teacher tasks will allow them to use their human talent more effectively to help students learn. Multiplication by Division.

Whether we’re talking about Great Britain or the US, obtaining and retaining teachers is a major problem. One consistent issue is the trade-off between a teacher’s salary and the cost of childcare, but we believe that teaching should be the ultimate mission-driven profession that provides purpose, meaning, and impact in the workplace. The economic incentives must be put in place for this to be the reality...women shouldn’t have to choose between either becoming a “Mum” or maintaining their teaching profession. In case you missed it, one of the great business opportunities is educating teachers…there are 270,000 teaching posts currently filled by underqualified teachers in the U.S.

With Varsity Blues, you could hear the Fat Lady humming…last school year’s encampments, harassment, and overall chaos (not to mention the years-long run-up of grade inflation) did even more to dilute the brand of elite schools. We need to delete elite…at least how it’s currently defined. Elite should mean excellence, not exclusivity. This is the academic version of crony capitalism…reinforcing the leading position of the haves at the expense of the have-nots.
