The GSV Big 10: The King of AI
Delete elites, salute saints, and memorialize mums...
When you Google โTop AI expert in the worldโ, the first person who pops up is Andrew Ng. Cofounder and chairman of Coursera, board member of Amazon, managing general partner of AI Fund, founder & CEO of Landin AI, and founder of Deeplearning.AI. There is nobody more influential and insightful in the world of AI than Dr. Ng. As big-time as Andrew is, whatโs even more impressive is what a kind and genuine human being he is. All hail King Ng!
The Invisible Cost of Generative AI in Education | The Future of Higher Education
To play off my friend Bill Campbellโs quip (โWhen we have facts, weโll use facts. When we have opinions, weโll use mineโ), I propose a twist: โWhen we have data, we use generative AI, when we have opinions we use mine.โ
AI is incredible at synthesizing data, but it is hardly anything special when you need to connect dots with significant insight. By design, ChatGPT is the worldโs best inside-the-box thinker. Weโve said over and over again that the AI Revolution is about Man & Machine, not Man vs. Machine โ and we need to remind students of this. Despite having the most advanced assistant on Earth at their fingertips, a poorly taught student will struggle to harness its full potential without first-principles thinking.
Voters become more polarized when presidential candidates take positions on issues in K-12 education | The Conversation
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. With 93 days until the election, this piece is a quick refresher on the education impact on presidential politics. One thing is clear: 75% of voters โ democrats, republicans, and independents โ support school choice. The entrenched status quo who want to see things stay the way they have been (and continue receiving donations) are likely on the wrong side of the historical ledger.
Where Are All The Special Educators? | Education Next
In what is typically a brutally demanding job, there is unfortunately a short supply of qualified saints. Teacher training programs are currently graduating less than 30,000 new special education teachers each year, falling short of the 46,000 who exit the profession annually.
โWhen you realize the government school system is more of a jobs program for adults than an education initiative for kids.โ | Corey DeAngelis on X
Coreyโs chart and comment speak for themselvesโฆwhile human resources devoted to K-12 education have skyrocketed, test scores and achievement have not. If the addition of these resources yielded similar up-and-to-the-right results for students, we would be cheering. Sadly, that has not been the case.
AI Will Never Substitute Teachers. This Failed Experiment Shows Us Why. | Fast Company
Roughly 10 years ago, our friend Andy Kessler delivered an intentionally provocative presentation at the ASU+GSV Summit about how AI would replace teachers. It almost caused a riot. Nobody seriously argues that technology will completely replace teachers, and we do not think AI is a silver bullet. In fact, we think teaching is the most vital profession on Earth, and it will only become more important in a world of AI. Itโs not about replacing teachers, itโs about supercharging them. Thoughtfully integrating AI to support teacher tasks will allow them to use their human talent more effectively to help students learn. Multiplication by Division.
2024 Education Focus Report | Powerschool
Two months ago it was announced that Bain Capital was taking PowerSchool private. This report, Addressing the Urgent, Shaping the Future of Student Learning, is chock-full of data detailing some of the biggest future challenges, priorities, and opportunities in education.
Teacher mums who leave profession fueling shortages | BBC
Whether weโre talking about Great Britain or the US, obtaining and retaining teachers is a major problem. One consistent issue is the trade-off between a teacherโs salary and the cost of childcare, but we believe that teaching should be the ultimate mission-driven profession that provides purpose, meaning, and impact in the workplace. The economic incentives must be put in place for this to be the reality...women shouldnโt have to choose between either becoming a โMumโ or maintaining their teaching profession. In case you missed it, one of the great business opportunities is educating teachersโฆthere are 270,000 teaching posts currently filled by underqualified teachers in the U.S.
How Should We Grade the Biden Administration on Education? |
This is just one manโs view and review of the Biden administrationโs education report card. Author Tim Dalyโs input came from a variety of sources across the spectrum of the education ecosystem.
Swinging College Admissions to a Fairer Shore | Gap Letter by Ryan Craig
With Varsity Blues, you could hear the Fat Lady hummingโฆlast school yearโs encampments, harassment, and overall chaos (not to mention the years-long run-up of grade inflation) did even more to dilute the brand of elite schools. We need to delete eliteโฆat least how itโs currently defined. Elite should mean excellence, not exclusivity. This is the academic version of crony capitalismโฆreinforcing the leading position of the haves at the expense of the have-nots.
