Chris Dixon famously said that “what the smartest people do on the weekend is what everyone else will do during the week in ten years.” That trend is playing out in the homeschooling boom. Florida’s Hillsborough County – a famous barometer of the nation’s political mood – now has over 10,000 home schoolers, up 74% since 2017. What’s more eye-opening is the homeschooling growth in areas like NY, DC, and California. The status quo has failed, parents are taking matters into their own hands.

An 87% national high school graduation rate sounds like progress, but less so when you realize that 1 in 5 young men don’t graduate. Only 40% of university students are male, and even after college, the most common address for men is their parent’s basement. Kudos to Richard Reeves for launching the American Institute for Boys and Men to tackle this century’s gender inequality crisis.

Matthew Pitinsky has officially hit his second home run with Parchment, which was acquired by Instructure for $795 million. Instructure is looking to go beyond the LMS and build a “verifiable, comprehensive digital passport” for learners…a personalized knowledge portfolio that lives much longer than their college class schedule.

When Vinod talks, we listen. The “modern day Renaissance man” will rule in the coming years – the era of horse blinders and extreme specialization is behind us in education. The 7 C’s – Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, Cultural Fluency, Civic Engagement, Collaboration, and Character – are the fundamentals of modern learning (while still a worthy skill, “Coding” does not make the cut). We must point out that we do NOT agree with Vinod’s point that “employment will be rendered optional in the coming decades.” 

#7 For the First Time Since the Pandemic Began, Colleges Saw Undergraduate-Enrollment Gains This Fall

The times, they are a changin’. The “traditional college experience” is becoming obsolete: public (↓ 6.1%) and private (↓ 4.0%) four-year institutions are losing enrollment quickly. White freshmen students (↓ 9.4%) are dwindling, and Bachelor’s degrees have increased less than a percent. Meanwhile, community colleges (↑ 4.4%) and HBCUs (↑ 6.1%) are booming, with massive growth in undergraduate (↑ 9.9%) and graduate (↑ 5.7%) certificates.

#8 Oregon Again Says Students Don’t Need to Prove Mastery of Reading, Writing or Math to Graduate, Citing Harm to Students of Color

Yes, you read that headline right. This attempt at social justice is yet another example of the “soft bigotry of low expectations.” You know what really harms students of color? Sending 18 year olds into the real world as illiterate adults who cannot do basic math. To say this is a disservice to Oregon’s student population is an understatement.

If that Oregon story was the shot, this one is the chaser. Texas is turning to objective standardized tests to determine class placement, and Black and Latino participation in these classes has climbed significantly. While many states continue to water down expectations, Texas raises the bar by expanding access and opportunity.
